In June 2017 Writers' House held a celebratory opening of its 5 new residential rooms on the third floor. Rehabilitation and resotration of these residential rooms was funded by Business Association of Georgia. This is one of the succesful examples of cooperation between government and business. With this opening Writers' House expands its field of work and very soon we will offer interesting residential programs to foreign authors and translators. Now Writers' House joins the world network of other literary houses and residences. Authors and translators will have the opportunity to reside in this beutiful house and create their works. As for the visitors of Tbilisi – they can spend unforgettable days in the heart of the old town, in this unique building situated in Sololaki, which apart representing a masterpiece of Tbilisi architecture, carries huge and interesting history.
The design of Writers’ House Residencies was created by famous Georgian artist Guga Kotetishvili. Refined and exclusive decoration of residential suites harmonically fuses with and continues unique design of the Art Nouveau building constructed in the beginning of 20th century.
Each room named after a famous author connected to Georgia and is unique thanks to its special and original design. Thus, Alexandre Dumas, Nizami Ganjavi, Boris Pasternak, Marjory and Oliver Wardrop and John Steinbeck suites exist as separate “museum-rooms” at Writers’ House and add another exceptional trait to the newly launched residency.
Part of the residential suites look over one of the oldest streets – Machabeli, another part has a garden view. This very garden is hosting one of the most exceptional restaurants in Tbilisi, “Littera”. Guests of the house will have a chance to taste exclusive meals of Georgian chef Tekuna Gachechiladze, created by her with a merger of Georgian and European cuisine traditions.
Residency has only been open for a little while and it already hosted first honorary guest – Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich for several days.
The residences allow us to extend and incoprporate culturual connections with international literary organizations, residecnes and other literary associations. This is the chance for us to have more close cooperation with foreign authors, translators and publishers, invite them to Georgia, plan literary seminars, workshops and panel discussions, to get invovled in international literary processses, to develop new ideas and projects.
The residences will also greatly assist the annual Tbilisi International Festival of Literature. Writers' House will be able to offer its own space to the festival's guest authors and translators.
